FARMER CITY, Ill. (Aug. 29) — Hall of Famer Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., opened the Farmer City Raceway season in April with a big victory, and he closed the track's Late Model racing in 2008 with another healthy purse. The polesitting Moyer led all 50 laps of the Farmer City 50, holding off a late challenge from Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., for a $5,000 payday in the independent UMP DIRTcar Series event. | Slideshow

Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., crossed the line third with Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., fourth and track champion Eric Smith of Bloomington in fifth. Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin, Ill., started outside the front row and ran second early before problems with the right-rear of his car forced him out of the race.

Moyer was in firm control most of the race, but Feger took second from Shirley on a lap-32 restart and caught the leader on lap 40. He nearly pulled alongside Moyer a few times but couldn't make the pass in settling for second.

Notes: Moyer's Victory Circle Chassis is sponsored by Banner Valley Hauling, J&J Steel, Karl Chevrolet, Minx Show Palace and Universal Concrete. ... Moyer's season-opening victory in World of Outlaws Late Model Series action at Farmer City paid $20,000 as he outdueled Shannon Babb in the closing laps. ... Rich Bell spun with 18 laps remaining but still ended up ninth. ... The evening drew 102 total race cars and racing was over by 10:40 p.m. ... Many of the same drivers will be heading to another independent UMP event on Saturday at Fairbury (Ill.) American Legion Speedway for the $10,000-to-win Prairie Dirt Classic, which wraps up Fairbury's season.
