What won the race: Fast qualifier and polesitter Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., dominated Friday’s Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals opener at Swainsboro Raceway to claim $10,053. He took the checkers 2.828 seconds ahead of fourth-starting Michael Page.
Quotable: “I was joking with (series director) Ray (Cook), I said, ‘I wish I could make it drive like that all the time,’” Overton remarked after his convincing triumph. “(Swainsboro promoter) Paul (Purvis) has done an awesome job with the racetrack. It’s slick for sure.”
Key notes: Overton kept Page at bay amid lapped traffic to record his fifth series triumph. … The feature was slowed by four cautions. … Third-running Pearson Lee Williams of Dublin, Ga., tagged the turn-two wall on lap 28 and retired. … Jensen Ford charged from the tail to finish eighth after drawing the first caution of the 53-lapper on the fourth circuit. … Third-starting Payton Freeman of Commerce, Ga., rebounded to finish 12th after contact with another competitor on lap 22 sent him spinning in turn four and relegated him to the tail. … 604 Crates ($3,000-to-win) are among divisions in action Friday and Saturday at Swainsboro.
On the move: Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., started 11th and finished third in the Big Frog Motorsports machine.
Winner's sponsors: Overton’s Wells Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Race Engine and sponsored by CrossFit Overton, Allstar Concrete, E-Z-Go, Big Dog Stump & Tree, R.W. Powell Construction, Convenient Lube, Allstar Performance and Topnotch Kustom Koncepts.
