Chris Madden chose to pit late but still captured the Blue-Gray 100.
What won the race: Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., took the lead for the final time Sunday with an outside move exiting turn two on lap 98, pacing the final two circuits at Cherokee Speedway and winning his eighth career $12,000 Blue-Gray 100. Madden led the first 81 laps from the pole, before pitting to change tires and rallied to earn his 12th career Carolina Clash tour victory. Madden also earned his second five-figure payday of the year at Cherokee after winning March’s $10,000 Southern All Star Dirt Series stop there.
Quotable: "I didn't know if I was gonna have enough laps left there at the end, I was gonna try to go all the way and then we seen that we had a little more tire wear than we normally have," an emotional Madden said. "My family is here, I got both of my sons here today. They hadn't seen one in eight years, so what a day."
Key notes: Recovering from an early pit stop of his own, Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., finished 2.504 seconds back. ... Three-time Carolina Clash feature winner this year, Ben Watkins was the only driver to complete all 100 laps on the same set of tires, finishing third. ... A 15-minute red flag was required for cleanup following a nine-car pileup in turn three on a lap-82 restart attempt, when fifth place running Michael Brown tangled with Brett Hamm, causing Hamm's car to flip over. All drivers were OK, but the incident ended the race for Hamm, Benji Hicks and Bryson Harper. Brown recovered to finish fourth. ... Zack Mitchell inherited the lead on lap 82 when Madden pitted, before suffering a flat tire on lap 88 and then apparent engine trouble ended his race on lap 93, crediting him with a 15th-place finish. ... Kyle Strickler led laps 88-98 before being overtaken by Madden in turn two, then suffered a flat right-rear tire entering turn three and limped around on the final lap to finish 10th. ... Anthony Sanders advanced 10 positions and finished sixth. ... Earning his fourth career Carolina Clash Series championship worth $10,000, Dennis Franklin suffered internal engine problems on lap 49, relegating him to finish 22nd. ... Driving a Doug Sanders-owned Longhorn Chassis, Chris Ferguson suffered a broken J-bar during his heat race, ending his night. ... Several drivers encountered tire problems in the closing laps, with seven documented cautions coming as a result of flats. ... Sunday's feature, the Blue-Gray 100 combined with the Mike Duvall Memorial and the season finale for the Carolina Clash Series, was slowed by 12 cautions and lasted over 90 minutes, with 14 competitors completing 100 laps.
On the move: Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., started 22nd and finished second.
Winner's sponsors: The Chris Madden Racing Rocket Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and sponsored by Drydene Performance Products, Franklin Enterprises, Henderson Amusement, Millwood Plumbing, Pyramid Materials, Davis Diesel Service, Worley Monument, VP Racing Fuels, Penske Racing Shocks and Hoosier Racing Tire.
