Jonathan Davenport takes the checkers in Saturday's Diamond Nationals.
What won the race: Holding off Ricky Thornton Jr. and Devin Moran after contact with a slowing lapped car with two laps remaining, Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., captured his second straight Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory in Saturday’s 17th annual CMH Diamond Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway. Davenport recorded his fourth career Diamond Nationals victory and his 70th Lucas Oil series triumph.
Quotable: “Keep throwing stuff at it (has been the biggest key to winning),” Davenport said. “We were stuck in our ways for a long time there at the beginning of the year, just cause we had such a good year last year and we thought same cars, same shocks, everything should work the same; but that’s just the way this Dirt Late Model racing goes ya know, you get too complacent and you quit working and everybody catches up.”
Key notes: Adding to Tuesday's $10,000 payday at Davenport Speedway, Davenport earned $15,000 for his victory in Saturday's co-sanctioned event with the Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association. … Moran, of Dresden, Ohio, settled for the runner-up spot, 1.466 seconds back, with Thornton Jr., of Chandler, Ariz., in third. ... Pole-starting Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., led the opening four laps before fading to fourth. … Overton, Moran, and Thornton Jr. took part in a heated battle for most of the 50-lapper while Davenport ran comfortably out front. … Daulton Wilson received the worst of a four-car pileup on the second circuit and was towed pitside with heavy damage; Garrett Alberson, Ross Robinson, and Jeff Herzog were also involved but were able to continue. … Third-starting Payton Looney of Republic, Mo., retired on lap 24. ... Saturday's feature was slowed by one other incident when Spencer Hughes slowed on lap 36 and lasted 26 minutes, with 12 competitors completing all 50 laps.
On the move: Tyler Bruening of Decorah, Iowa, started 15th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Davenport’s Double L Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions, ASC Warranty, Spartan Mowers, Mark Martin Automotive, Lucas Oil, Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas, VP Racing Fuels, Bilstein, Hoosier Racing Tire, Go Lithium, Midwest Sheet Metal and K1 RaceGear.
