Ross Bailes celebrates his $6,000 win at Lavonia.
What won the race: Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., took the lead from Michael Brown on the 30th lap and cruised to victory in Friday's 40-lap Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series feature at Lavonia Speedway. He beat Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., to the finish by 1.050 seconds for the $6,000 top prize.
Quotable: “Michael (Brown), he did a really good job. I could run the bottom and it seemed like he had to run the top,” Bailes said. “We got in lapped traffic and I was able to squeeze by him, but he was able to get back by me. It took a little bit of patience. We had a bunch of cautions and I just had to hit my marks and get him when I felt like I had the best run.”
Key notes: Bailes registered his second win and fifth top-five finish in six starts this season driving North Carolinian Billy Hicks's car. ... Bailes's 18th career Carolina Clash triumph placed him in a tie for fourth on the tour's all-time win list. ... The polesitting Brown settled for a third-place finish after leading laps 1-29. ... Friday's feature, which saw its first-place payout increased by $2,000 courtesy of Scooter's Auto, was slowed by eight separate incidents and lasted seven minutes shy of one full hour. ... The top 17 finishers were able to successfully complete all 40 laps.
On the move: Anthony Sanders of Spartanburg, S.C., started 16th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Bailes drove a Billy Hicks-owned Longhorn Chassis powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by H&H Auto Sales and Hoosier Tire.
Points chase: Jeff Smith (230 points) entered the event leading Daulton Wilson (214), Brett Hamm (206), Michael Brown (203) and Corey Gordon (196).
