What won the race: Grabbing the lead from race-long pacesetter Zack Mitchell with a last-lap, last-turn slider, sixth-starting Kyle Bronson of Brandon, Fla., stole Saturday’s $10,053 Jimmy Thomas Memorial at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Bronson bagged his first career Schaeffer's Spring Nationals feature victory, marking five winners through the first five series races.
Quotable: “I really gotta thank Brandon Overton there, he told me to put some hard tires on and that’s what we did,” Bronson said. “We didn’t take off very good, but we got going really good there at the end. Yeah, Zack (Mitchell), I slid him pretty clean there a couple laps in a row and I slowed down there in the middle last time, to not let him cross me over and he ass-drilled me. I don’t know whose fault it is, but we won $10,000.”
Key notes: Bronson attempted multiple slide jobs in the closing laps before stealing the lead in the final corner. He beat the second-starting Mitchell, of Enoree, S.C., by 0.547 of a second for his first win of 2024 and first victory of any kind since July 15, 2023, at Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway. … Ninth-starting Garrett Smith rounded-out the podium. ... Payton Freeman improved seven positions and finished seventh. ... Reigning Spring Nationals champ Carson Ferguson lost his left-rear tire while running second on lap 34 and called it a night. … Fourth-starting Pearson Lee Williams rallied to finish 10th after pitting on lap 42. ... Saturday's feature lasted 34 minutes, with 10 drivers completing 53 laps.
On the move: Dalton Cook of Columbus, Ga., started 16th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Bronson’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from RaceCar Engineering, Lucas Oil, Borchers Equipment, Michael Lloyd Hauling & Demolition, Tillman Roofing, Angry Elephant Tattoo & Piercing, LTX Home Builders, All Steel Buildings, Earnhardt Technologies Group, Fast Shafts, Boswell Oil, VP Racing Fuels, Bilstein Shocks and Midwest Sheet Metal.
