What won the race: Leading all but the first lap of Friday's 40-lap WISSOTA Classic, Kevin Burdick collected a $3,000 victory at Grand Rapids Speedway, the first of his career on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series. The outside front-row starter took the checkers 0.903 of a second ahead of Jeff Massingill, whose last-lap pass last season gave him the WISSOTA Classic victory.
Quotable: "I didn't know the best place to restart there because it was kind of marbly on the bottom of (turn) four there, so I was just crossing my fingers and hope it worked out," Burdick said. "I was just hoping someone wasn't gonna run me over because half the time people run into my left-rear quarterpanel on these starts and they think I'm brake-checking. But these guys all did a great job. I don't even think they hit my quarterpanel, so I appreciate that."
Key notes: Burdick notched his fourth Late Model victory of the season. ... Polesitter Gunner Frank led the first lap and finished sixth. ... Runner-up Jeff Massingill spun twice and twice was restored to his spot. ... Tyler Peterson's third-place effort gives him the series points lead by one marker over Cole Searing. ... Seven cautions slowed the action, including for the third-running Massingill's turn-two spin on a lap-38 restart (second-running Shane Sabraski was running ahead of Massingill, but officials placed blame on him for Massingill's spin and sent him to the tail). ... The first appeared on the 16th lap when Mike Winn and Ben Heinle tangled on the frontstretch. ... One lap after the ensuing restart, fourth-running Billy Kendall III spun in turn three, collecting Massingill. ... Derek Vesel and Ryan Mikkelson spun for another lap-17 yellow. ... Kyle Peterlin went over the turn-one banking on lap 21. ... George Ledin Jr. went around on the frontstretch on lap 25. ... Eric Lillo spun in turn four on the 38th lap. ... Adam Ayotte scratched after breaking a rear end in hot laps. Josh Clark also scratched. ... Shane Sabraski won the night's super stock feature.
On the move: Series points leader Cole Searing of Huron, S.D., started 14th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Burdick's MB Customs Race Car is powered by and Adams Automotive Engine and sponsored by Mohawk's Salvage, Genesis Attachments, On-Site Vending, Mike's Place, Stamp Signs and Jimmy's Nuts & Bolts.
