What won the race: A year removed from losing an engine after leading the opening 43 laps, second-starting Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., secured a commanding flag-to-flag victory in Friday's $7,500 Boone Coleman Gator 50 at Portsmouth Raceway Park. Wilson secured his first career Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series victory and his third overall triumph of the season — his first since a $10,000 Mid-East Super Late Model Series payday on March 29 at Ultimate Motorsports Park in Elkin, N.C.
Key notes: Seth Daniels trailed Wilson from laps 23-26 before Rusty Schlenk took the runner-up spot on lap 27 and Garrett Alberson passed them both for second on lap 28. Alberson pursued Wilson the final 23 laps, taking the checkers 1.926 seconds back. ... Series points leader, Schlenk, of McClure, Ohio, appeared to draw the race's fourth and final caution on lap 46 when he retired from third. ... Seth Daniels inherited third on the lap-46 restart and completed the podium. ... R.J. Conley challenged Rod Conley for second before Rod appeared to cause the third stoppage on lap 23. R.J. slipped as low as eighth before rebounding to fourth, while Rod could only get back to seventh. ... Clay Harris and Josh Bocook were the race's first retirees when they appeared to tangle on the second lap. … The event honored Coleman, of West Portsmouth, Ohio, who founded Boone Coleman Construction in 1957 before founding Portsmouth 33 years later; Coleman died on Feb. 4, 2011, at the age of 77. ... The race lasted 34 minutes, with five starters completing 50 laps. ... Zach Hill scratched.
On the move: Shane Bailey of Grayson, Ky., started 21st and finished fifth.
