What won the race: Using a third-to-first move past Christian Thomas and Ethan Wilson on a lap-35 restart, fifth-starting Dustin Mitchell of Pine Level, N.C., led the final five circuits to win Saturday's 40-lap fifth annual Edwards Family Memorial at Lake View Motor Speedway. Mitchell motored to a $5,000 Ultimate Southeast Series victory, notching the sixth of his career and becoming the first repeat winner this season.
Quotable: “That’s one of the funnest races I’ve probably run in the last five years right there,” Mitchell said. “Hats off to this track crew, they put a heck of a track together tonight. I was a little worried about it being one lane, but it was like ‘get after it, get up on that cushion and go.’ I knew I had a good car, I was kinda sitting there riding and I knew I had to just clear Ethan (Wilson), then I’d be good.”
Key notes: Christian Thomas and Ethan Wilson battled from the opening lap, with turn-two contact sending Wilson spinning to draw the race's first caution. Wilson was allowed to keep his spot and nosed ahead of Thomas to lead lap 25, before fading to third. ... Thomas led 34 of the first 35 laps before giving way to Mitchell in the closing laps and taking the checkers 1.787 seconds back. ... There were three lead changes between Thomas, Wilson and Mitchell. ... Tenth-starting Brent Robinson finished fourth. ... Luke Cooper gained six spots and placed sixth. ... Brian Strickland spun from sixth in turn two on lap 14, collecting seventh-running Michael Rouse, who slid broadside into Strickland's nose. Strickland did not continue, while Rouse recovered to eighth after pitting to repair heavy right-side damage. ... Willie Milliken spun from fourth to cause the sixth stoppage on lap 20, while Zach Cox and David Baker had an entirely separate spin. Cox (7th) and Baker (11th) continued to complete 40 laps, while Milliken slowed to bring out the seventh and final yellow flag on lap 35, setting up a six-lap dash to the finish. Milliken, whose car showed steam as it rolled to a stop, finished 12th, the first car not running at the finish. ... The event honored Hank and Jimmy Edwards, two legendary drivers who combined for thousands of feature wins across 70 years of racing history in the Carolinas. ... The feature lasted 35 minutes. ... Daniel Tucker scratched after hot laps.
On the move: Aiden Price of Huntersville, N.C., started 24th and finished ninth.
