What won the race: Muscling his way by Dakotah Knuckles as they came to complete lap 11, third-starting Christian Hanger of Winchester, Tenn., led the rest of Saturday's 44-lap 16th annual Buddy Rogers Memorial at Tazewell Speedway. Hanger led the final 30 laps for a $5,044 payday in earning his second Coltman Farms Southern All Star Series victory of the season and the second of his career.
Quotable: “Man this is awesome, I’ve dreamed of winning here since I was a kid. You know we drew the 18 (pill) when we come in here today, I guess it was meant to be,” Hanger said. “It paid off to be that black hauler on the hill this weekend. Shoutout to Scott (Bloomquist), we all love him, praying for that family. The Rogers family, I appreciate them helping out with this deal, just everything they do. Man, this Longhorn on Bilsteins was bad news tonight.”
Key notes: It's Hanger's fourth overall victory of the season, adding to his two wins at Wheel, Tenn.'s Duck River Raceway Park on March 16 and June 15. ... Hanger appeared to win Sept. 1's $6,000 Sam Pugh Memorial at Duck River before being disqualified for a deck-height violation in postrace technical inspection. ... Second-starting Dakotah Knuckles led the opening 10 laps before giving way to Hanger and slipping to 10th. ... Pole-starting David Payne, 2016's Rogers Memorial winner, reclaimed the runner-up spot on lap 12 and pressured Hanger the rest of the way, finishing 1.134 seconds back at the line. ... Points leader Dalton Cook took third on lap 13 and rounded out the podium. ... The race was slowed by one caution when Steve Smith spun from 10th on lap 42; he did not continue. ... The event honored Buddy Rogers, the eastern Tennessee racing legend who competed in the inaugural Tazewell race in 1965. Rogers racked up dozens of victories and multiple track championships throughout his storied career; he died in 2008 after a bout with cancer. ... The 44-lapper lasted 13 minutes, with 17 competitors completing the distance.
On the move: Jason Trammell of Knoxville, Tenn., started 10th and finished sixth.
