What won the race: Making a triumphant debut in the long-running Cotton Pickin’ event, Ethan Dotson of Bakersfield, Calif., regained command from Brandon Overton on lap 30 and marched on to capture the 60-lap Comp Cams Super Dirt Series feature at Magnolia Motor Speedway. The open-wheel modified transplant beat Ashton Winger to the finish line by 1.846 seconds for a $20,000 first-place check.
Quotable: “The racetrack was good,” Dotson said. “It was wide and kind of elbows up, the way I like it. It was fun.”
Key notes: Dotson led laps 1-20 before ceding the top spot to Brandon Overton on a restart, but he quickly gathered himself to move back in front on lap 30 and never trailed again. He did have a close call on lap 52, however, when Kyle Beard slowed directly ahead of him on the backstretch to draw the race’s third and final caution flag. … Dotson, who broke the late Scott Bloomquist’s track record in time trials, earned his second win of the season for ASD Motorsports just eight days after claiming his first in Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series action at Talladega Short Track. It was his third career Comp Cams triumph with both previous checkered flags coming last year. … Winger shot past Overton for second on the lap-52 restart and survived a scrape of the homestretch wall the following circuit to nab runner-up money. … Overton, who led laps 21-29, settled for third, one spot better than his younger brother Cody Overton. … Early cautions flew on lap five for Ross Camponovo’s slowing car and lap 20 for Joseph Joiner falling off the pace on the homestretch. … Comp Cams points leader Logan Martin was running sixth during the lap-20 caution period when his car had to be pushed off the track. He didn’t return and was credited with a 22nd-place finish.
On the move: Jeremy Shaw of Millport, Ala., started 20th and finished 11th.
