Cory Hedgecock hoists the checkers in I-75's victory lane.
What won the race: Regaining the lead when Brandon Overton had a flat tire with 10 laps to go, Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., paced the rest of the way for his first career Hunt The Front Super Dirt Series victory at his home track, I-75 Raceway. Hedgecock took the checkers 1.331 seconds ahead of Stormy Scott to pocket a $10,000 payday on opening night of the tour's championship weekend.
Quotable: "I knew we were struggling in traffic. I just couldn't get by (lapped cars) and then Brandon drove by me," Hedgecock said. "I felt like I got up on a wheel and felt like I did something, but apparently he had a flat, but either way we'll, we'll take it. I don't care how I get 'em anymore. Just a good night. Gives (me) some momentum tomorrow and everything. I hate me and Brandon didn't get to duke it out, but I really do think we were maybe as fast as him at times and then at times he was faster than me."
Key notes: Hedgecock's nine Super Late Model touring victories at I-75 is seven more than any other driver. ... The second-starting Hedgecock led 30 of the opening 31 circuits of the 50-lapper before losing the top spot to Brandon Overton in a heated battle amid traffic. ... Overton, who led laps 31-40, slowed with a flat right rear tire to draw the race's final caution with 10 to go but salvaged an eighth-place finish. ... Polesitter Dale McDowell faded two positions to finish third, behind runner-up Stormy Scott, who advanced six spots. ... Overcoming a near-spin on the second lap, ninth-starting Kaede Loudy finished fourth. ... The first of five cautions waved on lap two for a stack-up in turns one and two which ended Josh Henry's race. ... Vic Hill's car got airborne after contact with a spinning Caden Mullinax on lap 11; Hill ended up 16th. ... John Ownbey retired on lap 17 after slowing on the track. ... The 50-lap feature lasted 28 minutes with 18 cars running at the finish. ... The Hunt the Front season concludes its doubleheader championship weekend Saturday with a $20,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Jackson Hise of Ocala, Fla., started 24th and finished 11th.
