Ross Bailes heads to a victory in the Stick Elliott Memorial.
What won the race: After overtaking leader Michael Brown on a lap-12 restart, fourth-starting Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., kept Chris Ferguson in check late to secure the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series victory in Saturday's Stick Elliott Memorial at Cherokee Speedway. Finishing 1.590 seconds ahead of Ferguson, Bailes earned $4,000 for his 15th career series win.
Quotable: "I kept trying to work the top on those restarts and couldn’t make it stick, but I finally got a good run. I hate I got into Chris on that one restart. I thought I had him cleared,” Bailes said. "Hopefully our luck’s turned around. We’re going to go to Wisconsin and race for 50 grand next week (at New Richmond's Cedar Lake Speedway).”
Key notes: Bailes' victory followed a string of bad luck on the Schaeffer's Southern Nationals that saw him lead five races without winning. The stretch included three consecutive races in which Bailes suffered a flat tire while running among the top five. ... Third-place finisher Michael Brown led the first 12 laps. ... Ben Watkins spun running fourth on the 12th lap. ... On the ensuing restart, a half dozen or more cars were involved in a pileup before the flagstand that saw John Henderson's car roll; no injuries were reported. ... Brian Connor drew a caution when he went up in smoke on the 15th lap. ... Ten cars finished on the lead lap. ... The series returns to Cherokee for a $5,000-to-win event on Sept. 6.
On the move: Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, S.C., started 18th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Bailes’s Big Frog Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Race Engine and sponsored by Dave’s Towing, M&W Transport, Collins Signs, Integra and Sunoco.
Points chase: After Cherokee, Dennis Franklin (418 points) of Gaffney, S.C., leads Michael Brown (407) and David Yandle (386).
