Mike Marlar led all 40 laps Sunday to secure the weekend sweep at Volunteer Speedway.
What won the race: Fending off a late-race challenge from Devin Moran, pole-starting Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., led all 40 laps to win Sunday's rain-postponed $12,000 Spring Thaw opener at Volunteer Speedway. Marlar mastered the XR Super Series field for his second career victory — his second in as many days after topping Saturday's $30,000 headliner — while collecting a total of $42,000.
Quotable: “We had a really good car there, and Devin (Moran), man, he made me work for it,” Marlar said. “He slid me down there and I got back by him, but that’s fun racing with Devin and his whole team. The track was awesome today, really smooth from top to bottom. Sunday, day race, you know, we raced all over pretty daggum good and had a cushion on one end and could run middle-to-bottom on the other end, so definitely a fun race and ol’ Devin had me sweating there.”
Key notes: Other than Moran's late-race pressure, Marlar's biggest scare came on lap 21 when he and Josh Henry made contact. ... The second-starting Moran, of Dresden, Ohio, pursued Marlar for the entire distance, finishing 0.806 of a second back. ... Fourth-starting Jimmy Owens grabbed third on the lap-33 restart and completed the podium. ... Seventh-starting Brandon Overton rounded out the top-five finishers. ... Hudson O'Neal ran as high as fifth on lap 28 before slipping to finish seventh driving for Kevin Rumley. ... Jonathan Davenport improved five positions and finished eighth. ... Tyler Erb rebounded to finish 11th after spinning to bring out the race's second stoppage on lap 28. ... Ross Bailes recovered to finish 12th after slowing with a flat right-rear to draw the race's first caution on lap 27. ... Tenth-running Scott Bloomquist brought out the third yellow when his right-rear wheel assembly came off on lap 32, ending his night. ... Sunday's feature was slowed by four incidents and lasted 25 minutes, with 14 competitors completing the distance and 19 running at the finish. ... Sunday's Spring Thaw opener was originally scheduled for Friday before being postponed by rain.
On the move: Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., started 11th and finished sixth.
