Rick Eckert heads for a $5,000 victory at Path Valley Speedway.
What won the race: Regaining control for good when he powered around the outside of mid-race leader Matt Cosner, pole-starting Rick Eckert of York, Pa., sped to victory in Tuesday's $5,000 Appalachian Mountain Speedweek stop at Path Valley Speedway. Eckert led twice for 24 laps (1-10, 22-35) and wasn't seriously challenged over the final 14 en route to his seventh career AMS triumph and his first of the season.
Quotable: “I thought I was gonna get caught with my pants down sooner or later, you know, they watered that top (line) before the race and they don’t normally do that, which actually it helped, but I just didn’t know when to get up there,” Eckert said. “(Cosner) went by me and I’m like ‘you’re an idiot’ (to myself) and so I dogged him there pretty hard. Then finally, he got held up there in (lapped) traffic and changed his mind at the wrong time and I slipped by him there.”
Key notes: Ninth-starting Mason Zeigler closed within three tenths of Eckert's advantage with eight laps remaining before crossing the checkers 1.481 seconds back. ... Gregg Satterlee's bid for three straight miniseries wins ended with a podium result. ... Dan Stone and Coleby Frye each improved six spots, rounding out the top five. ... The fourth-starting Cosner, of Ridgeley, W.Va., led laps 11-21 before giving way to Eckert and Zeigler and eventually fading to sixth. ... Kyle Hardy finished 13th after he was disqualified from a third-place qualifying effort for a deck height violation. ... Drake Troutman took 15th aboard Joe Petyak's No. 44 Longhorn entry, a last-minute ride for the 19-year-old while his familiar No. 7 race team preps to rejoin the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on Friday at Tennessee's Smoky Mountain Speedway. ... The feature was slowed four times, most notably for a 10-minute red flag on lap two when D.J. Myers spun and ended up on top of the right side of Jason Covert's machine. Both drivers were unhurt, with Myers continuing for five additional laps before pulling off. Covert only endured cosmetic damage and the York Haven, Pa., veteran said he'll be able to race Thursday at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway. ... Bryan Bernheisel spun from eighth on lap three and required a tow to the pits. ... Tuesday's fourth round lasted 26 minutes, with 15 competitors completing the distance.
On the move: Runner-up finisher Mason Zeigler, of Chalk Hill, Pa., started ninth.
