Bobby Pierce celebrates his Independence Motor Speedway victory.
What won the race: Diving under fellow front-row starter Nick Hoffman on the 18th lap, Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., led the rest of Monday's 40-lap World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series event at Independence Motor Speedway for a $10,000 victory. Taking his 21st career WoO victory, the polesitting Pierce took the checkers 1.5 seconds ahead of series points leader Brandon Sheppard with Hoffman settling for third.
Quotable: "From the start, I was a little worried. I knew Nick (Hoffman) and Brandon (Sheppard) were soft. When Chad (Simpson) fell out of the race, that gave Nick the front row and I was like, 'Man, he's probably gonna get me on the soft tires.' If I can just hang with him, you know?" Pierce said. "And we did. We got him in lapped traffic. The car was great, the latter half of the race, the car was great."
Key notes: Pierce debuted a Longhorn Chassis and lowered the track record in time trials. ... Just after Pierce took the lead in the 40-lapper, Hoffman edged back ahead exiting turn two on the 18th lap, but slipped over the backstretch banking when he ran out of room trying to lap Dennis Erb Jr. ... Tyler Bruening took the checkers nearly sideways in a last-lap scramble out of turn four among several drivers. ... Two cautions slowed the race, the second on lap 34 when Ryan Gustin slowed after contact with Brent Larson forced him over the banking entering turn one. .... Garrett Alberson's spin after a lap-three tangle drew the race's first caution. ... The feature rolled at 9:45 p.m., but without scheduled outside front-row starter Chad Simpson, who couldn't fire after what was later diagnosed as a bad battery. Hoffman inherited his starting spot. ... In heat action, Lance Hofer's car rolled several times when he went over the turn-one banking; he wasn't injured. ... Matt Ryan and Bobby Hansen scratched before feature time. ... The event is in the middle of WoO's busy and far-flung Heartland Grand Tour.
On the move: Cade Dillard of Robeline, La., started 12th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Low Voltage Solutions, Rio Grande Waste Services, Inc., Hoker Trucking, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Oakwood Tire Center, Bloomington Normal Truck Performance, Carnaghi Towing & Repair, Toyota of Danville, Floyd’s Waste Systems, A Plus Vacuum, Leka Tree Service, Velocita, Bert Transmissions by Budda, Ted Brown’s Quality Paint & Body Shop, VP Race Fuels, Swift Springs, Bilstein Shocks and Performance Bodies.
