What won the race: Back on the series for the first time since winning last year's championship, Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., led 30 laps unchallenged Tuesday at Springfield Raceway for a $5,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory. The outside front-row starter took the checkers 2.216 seconds ahead of fast qualifier Dillon McCowan with six-race winner and points leader Tyler Erb in third after a back-and-forth duel with the runner-up.
Quotable: "Honestly, (the car's) been really good here in years past. Just got lucky. Got put on the front row there and got the start and was able to control the race at my own pace," Winger said. "My dad and Zach have been working their butts off. It's been a couple of months since we won. We, for some reason, can't get going until about June or July."
Key notes: Winger has 13 career Summer Nationals victories (six apiece in 2021 and '23). ... A regular on the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series, Winger notched his first victory of any kind since April 5 on the Schaeffer's Spring Nationals. ... Garrett Smith gave up fifth when he had a flat tire during the lap-22 caution; he finished 13th, the last car on the lead lap. ... Polesitter Scott Crigler fell from contention on the lap-three restart; he pitted during the lap-eight caution and ended up 12th. ... Three cautions slowed the action, the first on the third lap when last year's race winner Logan Martin spun (he'd given up his sixth starting spot for the tail after going to the hot pit before the green flag dropped). ... Tyler Wolff spun for a lap-nine yellow then hit the wall for a lap-23 caution. ... Aussie racer Kye Blight skipped his first series race and plans to rejoin the tour Thursday. ... Wednesday's scheduled event at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill., rained out.
On the move: Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., started 15th and finished seventh after a first-lap scrape in his heat race helped drop him to a fifth-place finish in the prelim.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Jeff Mathews Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from RV Select Inc., CURS, Super K Express, Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, Angry Elephant Tattoo and Piercing, FK Rod Ends, A-Plus Collision Center, Hoosier Tire, Simpson Race Products, Collins Signs, DirtCarLift.com, VP Race Fuels, CSR Aluminum Fabrication, Boswell Oil and WrapTech.
Points chase: Week 3 points after Springfield: 1. Ashton Winger (78); 2. Dillon McCowan (73); 3. Tyler Erb (68); 4. Clay Stuckey (63); 5. Tyler Clem (58). Overall points after Springfield: 1. Tyler Erb (712); 2. Jason Feger (662); 3. Dillon McCowan (511); 4. Kye Blight (452); 5. Tyler Clem (438).
