Jason Feger (25) overtakes Morgan Bagley (14M) for the lead en route to winning the Herald & Review 100.
What won the race: Rebounding from his involvement in a lap-75 incident that swept up the four front-running cars, Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., charged around the outside to grab the lead from Morgan Bagley on lap 85 and marched on to victory in Thursday’s 44th annual Herald & Review 100 at Macon Speedway. He earned $7,500 for his second career win in the fifth-mile oval’s long-running event and his second triumph of the 2024 DIRTcar Summer Nationals.
Quotable: “Once I fell back like that, I mean, you try to be patient early, but then 25 (laps) to go or whatever, I’m like, ‘Man, I’ve just got to make something happen,’” Feger said. “So I got old school, got up there and Highside Hustle'd a little bit, and that’s what the fans here at Macon love. That’s what got us to the front and it feels good.”
Key notes: Feger was running third on lap 75 when Tyler Erb — about to be lapped — slowed in turn four ahead of leader Tyler Clem, causing a jam-up that left the Floridian, Ashton Winger, Feger and Tommy Sheppard Jr. stacked up to draw a caution flag. All four involved drivers restarted at the rear but rallied to finish in the top four spots with Feger beating Clem by 0.784 of a second, Winger placing third and Sheppard taking fourth. … Erb escaped the tangle and went on to finish fifth. He led lap 38 before coming together with Clem the following lap and sustaining apparent damage that prevented him from seriously contending the rest of the way. … The marathon race included seven lead changes among six drivers: Clem (laps 1-37, 42, 44-75), Erb (38), Dillon McCowan (39-41), Winger (43), Morgan Bagley (76-84) and Feger (85-100). … Bagley inherited the lead after the lap-75 tangle involving the top-four cars, but after his stint in front he slid sideways in turns one and two on lap 93 and collected the third-running McCowan to bring out the final caution flag. McCowan finished seventh and Bagley placed eighth. … Clem’s career-best Summer Nationals finish of second came after he pitted to change a flat left-rear tire on lap 76. … Ryan Unzicker’s bid for a second consecutive H&R 100 victory ended when he retired during a lap-42 caution period while running sixth. … The feature was slowed by 11 caution flags and lasted 1 hour and 14 minutes. … After the three heat races ended shortly after 7:30 p.m., a Late Model didn’t turn another competitive lap on the track until the feature started at 9:51 p.m. The checkered flag flew at 11:05 p.m.
On the move: Tommy Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin, Ill., started 15th and finished fourth.
