Gregg Satterlee races Mason Zeigler for the $8,000 victory at Thunder Mountain.
What won the race: Storming past early leader Mason Zeigler and repelling a late-race challenge from Drake Troutman, sizzling Gregg Satterlee of Indiana, Pa., led the final 34 laps to win Friday's inaugural Vince Gaston Memorial at Thunder Mountain Speedway. Satterlee secured the $8,000 unsanctioned Super Late Model victory, his fourth overall triumph since June 8.
Key notes: Satterlee has now earned more than $30,000 over that span, including the $10,000 Appalachian Mountain Speedweek title. ... Satterlee also won the track’s most recent major Dirt Late Model event, topping a 35-car ULMS field on Sept. 24, 2021, to win the $10,000 Jim German Memorial. ... Troutman of Hyndman, Pa., pressured Satterlee in the closing laps, crossing the checkers a scant 0.138 of a second back. ... Mason Zeigler settled for third after pacing the opening 13 circuits. ... Andrew Yoder and Max Blair both slipped by Michael Lake on lap 37, placing fourth and fifth respectively. Lake faded to ninth. ... The event honored Gaston of Punxsutawney, Pa., a former engineer and custom fabricator who primarily worked on race cars, tractors and trucks. Gaston died in his home on Feb 28 at the age of 71. ... The race was slowed by three separate incidents and lasted 29 minutes, with 10 drivers completing 47 laps. ... Pa.'s Thunder Mountain Speedway still does not host weekly racing, instead continuing to schedule the occasional special event.
