Series director James Essex congratulates Garrett Alberson.
What won the race: Fending off a mid-race challenge from Spencer Hughes, pole-starting Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., earned a flag-to-flag victory in Saturday's 40-lap Northern Allstars Late Model Series stop at Florence Speedway. Alberson's first career series triumph is worth $6,200 after the four-lap dash paid $1,000 courtesy of Bill Schildman at Player’s Choice Playing Cards and fast qualifier honors awarded $200.
Quotable: “I definitely was worried there with so many cautions and Spencer (Hughes) is a really good racer, there’s a lot of good racers here,” Alberson said. “I didn’t do a very good job on that last restart, I let myself get out of rhythm and I about cost us there, I think. Big thanks to (crew chief) R.C. (Whitwell) and (wife) Dani for helping me find the line over (in turns one and two), I was not doing a great job there early.”
Key notes: Alberson earns his second inaugural series victory in as many nights after topping Friday's $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals event at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway. ... The fifth-starting Hughes, of Meridian, Miss., nearly led lap 14, coming within 0.028 of a second of spoiling Alberson's perfect night. ... Eighth-starting Dustin Nobbe nipped Hughes at the line by 0.054 of second, taking runner-up honors nearly 1.5 seconds behind Alberson. ... Robby Hensley ran as high as second on the lap-32 restart before slipping to fourth. ... Fifth-running James Rice trudged through the turn-one cushion and stopped to cause the race's second stoppage on lap 18. He recovered to finish eighth. ... Jason Jameson slowed from 10th to draw the race's sixth and final caution on lap 34. He was unable to continue. ... Kody Evans slowed from third on lap 30 before calling it a night. ... Series points leader Josh Rice slowed from 10th and pulled into the infield on lap 27. ... Saturday night's show was delayed several hours because of rain that hit the track before hot laps were scheduled to start. ... The 40-lapper lasted 28 minutes, with 10 competitors completing the distance; the checkers flew at 12:35 a.m. local time. ... Austin Lay, Jared Bailey, Trevor Landrum and Kirk Phillips were among drivers who opted to load up and not compete following the late-afternoon rain.
On the move: Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind., started 13th and finished fifth.
