Devin Gilpin gets rolling before his Brownstown victory.
What won the race: Leading all the way from the pole, Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind., captured Saturday's 10th annual Born Free 40 on the Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series at Brownstown Speedway. Gilpin's $5,000 payday marks his fifth career Born Free 40 triumph (2016, ’17, ’20, ’21) and his third career Iron-Man Series victory — his second at Brownstown and his first since Aug. 6, 2022's $10,000 Hall of Fame Classic.
Key notes: Gilpin's first Iron-Man Series victory came on May 21, 2021, at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, Ky. ... Gilpin overcame the loss of brakes in the second half of the race; he discovered rear axle problems afterwards. ... Seventh-starting Jordan Wever grabbed the runner-up spot on a lap-15 restart and trailed Gilpin the rest of the way, finishing 3.384 seconds back. ... Series points leader Rusty Schlenk and Shelby Miles traded third several times in the second half, with Schlenk taking the spot for good on lap 38 and Miles settling for fourth. ... Zachary Stalker improved eight positions and completed the top five. ... Fifth-starting Seth Daniels pursued Gilpin for the opening 14 circuits before fading to ninth. ... The 10th annual Born Free 40 was slowed by three separate incidents and lasted 18 minutes with 13 drivers completing the distance and 19 running at the checkers.
