Tyler Erb celebrates his eighth Summer Nationals victory.
What won the race: Fourth-starting Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, seized control on the opening lap and never looked back en route to winning Sunday's 30-lap DIRTcar Summer Nationals feature at Tri-State Speedway. Erb's $5,000 payday serves as his eighth Hell Tour victory of the season and the 12th of his career, while also marking his first career Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series triumph in the unique co-sanctioned event.
Quotable: “Our car’s been really good, our guy’s been working hard, we drove all night and it’s just fun,” Erb said. “I like this place, I haven’t been here in probably six or seven years and it’s just as cool as I remember it. This was a great race, a lot of fun for us, a good way to cap our week — we’ve had a long week.”
Key notes: It's Erb's second career Hell Tour victory at Tri-State after earning his first career series win there on June 25, 2017. ... Tanner English regained the runner-up spot for good on lap 22 and trailed Erb the final nine laps, finishing 0.546 of a second back. In finishing second, English clinched the $10,000 week 4 points bonus. ... Rodney Melvin gained 10 spots and rounded out the podium. ... Pole-starting Rusty Schlenk slipped as low as sixth before Ryan Missler made late-race contact with the wall, allowing Schlenk to grab fifth from him as the two took the white flag. ... Defending race winner Dylan Thompson spun from fourth on lap five, collecting Kye Blight and ending his race. Thompson recovered to ninth. ... The race's second and final stoppage came for an Austin Lay and Thomas Hunziker spin on lap 14. Hunziker called it a night, while Lay continued and placed 19th. ... The 30-lap feature lasted 13 minutes, with 16 drivers completing the distance and 20 running at the checkers. ... Ethan Dotson (dead battery in staging) and Jordan Wever (rear end issue) both scratched for the night.
On the move: Dillon McCowan of Urbana, Mo., started 15th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Erb’s winning Best Performance Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Langenfelder Mechanical Contractors, Bulk Material Lift, First Class Septic, Roberts Bee Company, Anthony’s Pizza, JRR Trucking, Base Racing Fuel, Base Oil, Sani-Weld, Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Racing Shocks, Go Lithium Batteries, Midwest Sheet Metal, Terbo Threads and KBC Graphix.
