Ryan Gustin picked up a $15,000 paycheck in Fairmont, Minn.
What won the race: Leading all the way from his pole position to win his first XR Super Series feature, an unchallenged Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, grabbed a $15,000 victory in Sunday's series debut at Fairmont Raceway. Gustin took the checkers 1.809 seconds ahead of fourth-starting Brent Larson in the Bacon Town Showdown that drew 18 entries.
Quotable: "It feels real good. You know, we had a great car there," Gustin said. "I could kind of move wherever I knew (the track surface) was gonna lock down at some point so I just trying to make sure (to communicate with my) guys during that red (flag) to move me down. They did a great job with that."
Key notes: Gustin notched his sixth overall victory of the season. ... Outside front-row starter Bobby Pierce ran second the first nine laps but retired during a red-flag period because of distributor issues. ... The red flag appeared on the 10th lap when ninth-running Dyllan Ricks got upside down in turns three and four; two wreckers removed his car but he wasn't injured. ... Three other cautions slowed the 30-lapper. ... Fourth-running Rodney Sanders, driving Brent Larson's backup car, slowed and retired after 22 laps. ... Tyler Myers lost a right-rear wheel on the fifth lap. ... Colby Klaassen drew a first-lap caution. ... Kevin Larson scratched from the feature lineup. ... The third-year tour wraps up a busy month with a Hawkeye State tripleheader starting with July 21's opener at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, followed by a July 22-23 doubleheader at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway, with each event awarding a $15,000 winner's prize.
On the move: Ryan Schaufler of Hutchinson, Minn., started 17th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Gustin’s Todd Cooney-owned Infinity Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and sponsored by Alan’s Seamless Gutters, Karl Auto Group, May Properties, Murty Farms, Mark Hambelton Ford, Schaeffer’s Racing Oil, FK Rod Ends, Swift Springs, VP Race Fuels, Bilstein Shocks, Dynamic Drivelines and Performance Bodies.
