What won the race: Adding another flourish to his performance record in Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series action at his hometown track, Kyle Peterlin was victorious in the tour’s 40-lap feature on Saturday night at Hibbing Raceway. The resident of Hibbing, Minn., grabbed the point from Travis Budisalovich on lap nine and led the rest of the way for a $3,000 triumph in the opener of the oval’s Labor Day Shootout.
Quotable: “You worry that you’ll overheat the tires when the track’s like this so I was buzzing ‘em up right when the caution came out, and weaving back-and-forth to try and keep heat in ‘em, because if you let ‘em get too cool they’ll seal up and you slip out of the rubber and then you lose the race,” Peterlin said. “It was a little nerve racking, but once I fired off of four for that restart I felt the traction so I felt pretty comfortable at that point.”
Key notes: Peterlin’s victory was the fifth of his career in Hibbing’s Labor Day Shootout and the sixth of his career on the WISSOTA Challenge Series. All of his WCS checkered flags have come at Hibbing, including three last year. … The track surface locked down around the inside lane soon after Peterlin overtook Budisalovich for the lead, keeping the field in single-file formation throughout the remainder. … The race’s lone caution flag flew on lap 33 after Jeff Provinzino — running a Scott Bloomquist-lookalike wrap in honor of the late Hall of Famer — slapped the inside tire off turn four while battling for second with Budisalovich and slowed with a damaged nose. Budisalovich relinquished second during the caution period due to a flat left-rear tire. … Series points leader Tyler Peterson chased Peterlin for the final seven circuits and finished second, 0.836 of a second behind. … Shane Sabraski, winner of July 11's $11,111 Tom Waseleski Memorial in WISSOTA competition at Hibbing, finished 11th after capturing the evening’s super stock feature. … The WISSOTA Challenge Series caps its Labor Day weekend tripleheader with Sunday’s $3,000-to-win finale at Hibbing. Racing is starts at 5 p.m.
On the move: Rick Niemi of Eveleth, Minn., started 19th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Peterlin’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Town & Country Garages & Cabins, Up North Lettering, Grandma and Grandpa Peterlin, Schaeffer’s Racing Oil, Speedwerx, Shocks by Hammer, AFCO Brakes, Allstar Performance and Factory Team Snap Signs.
