Chad Simpson celebrates his victory at Moberly.
What won the race: Regaining control from Billy Moyer for good on a lap-13 restart, second-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, led the remainder of Sunday's 30-lap fourth annual Wiener Nationals at Moberly Motorsports Park. Simpson led twice for 19 laps (11, 13-30) to win $10,000, marking his first Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association victory of the season and the 20th of his career.
Quotable: “I’ve been kind of hard on myself the last couple of days after starting up front, and feeling like we had a car to win the last two nights,” Simpson said. “We still had solid fourth place finishes the last couple nights but this is what we are out here for. We want to win these races, and you know the championship is great, but win races and that part will come.”
Key notes: Simpson, the reigning MLRA champ and current points leader, now has three overall victories on the season — May 27 at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway and Aug. 24 at Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa — both on the Malvern Bank-sponsored SLMR sister tours. ... Simpson notched his first five-figure payday since Sept. 2, 2023, in last year's $11,000 Roy Jenkins Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. ... Ninth-starting Dillon McCowan took second on a lap-27 restart and pursued Simpson the final four laps, taking the checkers 1.617 seconds back. ... Billy Moyer led 11 laps, including the opening 10 from the pole, before being overtaken by Simpson and McCowan, settling for third. ... Eighth-starting Tony Jackson Jr., winner of Saturday's $12,000 Jenkins Memorial at Wheatland, finished fourth. ... Jeff Herzog gained eight spots and finished eighth. ... The main event was slowed by three cautions and lasted 18 minutes, with 13 competitors completing 30 laps. ... Kyle Graves, Richard Kimberling, Ashlee Lancaster and Jim Vandandt each scratched.
On the move: Jon Kirby of Russellville, Ark., started 26th and finished 10th.
