Garrett Alberson makes his debut on Eldora's victory stage.
What won the race: Continuing a late-summer hot stretch, Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., led all 30 laps from the outside front-row to capture Sunday's Baltes Classic at Eldora Speedway. Alberson, who quickly answered Ricky Thornton Jr.'s slide job on a lap-19 restart, earned $5,000 for his second career Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series victory in taking the checkers 1.553 seconds ahead of polesitter Carson Ferguson, who slipped back as far as sixth before regaining the runner-up spot from Thornton on the final restart.
Quotable: "The track was a little demanding for sure. Definitely not a typical Eldora, I guess, kind of more like Dirt Track World Championship last year," Alberson said. "I've been wanting to stand on this stage for so long. It's so hard here, so many good guys. I think that heat race is the first thing I've ever even won here. So tonight has been really cool."
Key notes: Alberson's victory, his first at Eldora, comes a weekend after his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway. ... His first Iron-Man victory came Nov. 6, 2022, at Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel, Tenn. ... At Eldora, third-running Ricky Thornton Jr. dove under Alberson to edge ahead for a half-lap on the lap-19 restart, but Alberson went back past exiting turn four to officially retain the lead. ... Dream winner Jonathan Davenport ran as high as second but never pressured Alberson. ... Cory Hedgecock made a 10th-to-fifth run but retired with a late-race flat. ... Five cautions slowed the 31-lapper (a late caution required an extra lap), two for debris (laps 17 and 27). ... Ricky Weiss slowed for a lap-19 yellow, Tyler Erb went around in turn two on lap 21 and Zack Mitchell slowed on lap 29. ... In preliminaries, Tristan Chamberlain hit the turn-three wall after winning the second consolation but made repairs for the feature. ... Mike Marlar suffered a flat left-rear tire after leading the first couple of laps of the first heat race. ... Among others failing to make the feature: Kent Robinson, Devin Shiels, Tyler Millwood, Dusty Moore, Andrew Reaume and Freddie Carpenter. ... Eldora action resumes during a busy World 100 week Wednesday with a Castrol FloRacing Night in America event before the Thursday-Saturday World 100 concluding with a $54,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Gregg Satterlee of Indiana, Pa., started 11th and finished fifth.
