Dylan Thornton celebrates in victory lane at Boone Speedway.
What won the race: Narrowly edging Cory Dumpert as they raced under the white flag, sixth-starting Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., executed a turn-two crossover and beat Dumpert back to the checkers by 0.256 of a second to win Monday's $3,000 Late Model portion of the IMCA Super Nationals at Boone Speedway. Thornton, making his Super Nationals debut aboard a Late Model, notched his sixth overall victory and his third $3,000 payday of the season.
Quotable: “That was a hard race to run man, we were good at the beginning and it just seemed like every restart I would lose the lane I was in,” Thornton said. “I finally got to restart on the top and kinda got to go where I wanted, our car was getting better towards the end of the race. (Cory Dumpert) messed up, jumped the cushion. I didn’t think we were gonna get that one done until about five (laps) to go there, I knew we had a shot.”
Key notes: Thornton also collected $3,000 paydays this season in Malvern Bank East Series victories May 10 at Stuart (Iowa) International Speedway and June 21 at Lafayette County Speedway in Darlington, Wis. ... The ninth-starting Dumpert, of Newman Grove, Neb., led laps 42-48 before hopping the turn-two cushion and allowing Thornton to challenge. ... Modified veteran Anthony Roth improved 10 positions to round out the podium. ... Austen Becerra dominated much of the way, leading 40 of the race's first 41 laps before appearing to break something in the right front while battling Travis Denning for third on lap 45. Becerra went straight through turn one and off the racing surface, drawing the sixth stoppage. ... Denning, who stole the lead from Becerra on lap 22, tangled with Sean Johnson on the ensuing restart, sending him spinning. Denning was forced to tag the field and crashed hard in turn two on lap 46, drawing the eighth and final caution. ... There were four lead changes among Becerra, Denning, Dumpert and Thornton. ... The 50-lapper lasted 36 minutes, with 15 drivers completing the distance. ... Jeff Aikey, driving a car owned by Joel Callahan, slowed while leading the first consolation, snapping his streak of qualifying for 14 straight Super Nationals features he had attempted since 2008. ... Tom Berry Jr., in Aikey's former ride, scratched after engine woes in hot laps. ... As teams departing the track postrace, the teams of Evan Miller and Travis Denning accused each other of a collision, both showing photos on Facebook declaring the other at fault.
On the move: Joe Beal of Milan, Ill., started 18th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Thornton’s Brenda and Ricky Kay-owned Warrior Race Car is powered by a HalaBuilt Competition Engine and carries sponsorship from Salty’s BBQ and Catering, Kay Farms Elevator Trucking, Petersen Insurance, Pit Crew BBQ, Tyler Matzen Trucking, Vander Heiden Hauling & Farming, Hoker Trucking, Wheatland Auto Body, Wyffels Hybrids, Hyperco, Dynamic Drivelines and Capital Race Decals.
