What won the race: Charging around the outside of mid-race leader Henry Hornsby III on lap 23, 11th-starting Freddie Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., led the rest of Saturday's $10,000 Mountaineer 50 at Beckley Motor Speedway. Carpenter captured his second victory of the season and his second of the weekend after winning Friday's $4,000 Weekend on the Hill at Hilltop Speedway in Millersburg, Ohio.

Quotable: “I won a Crate race (at Beckley) way back,” Carpenter said. “This thing’s name is Betty Lou too, ain’t no catfish in her baby,” Carpenter replied when asked why he chose to run the track’s high line.

Key notes: Carpenter collected his first five-figure payday since winning the $10,059 Butterball Wooldridge Memorial on July 22, 2017, at Richmond (Ky.) Raceway. ... Colten Burdette led the opening three laps before spinning to draw the race's second caution. Burdette rebounded to grab the runner-up spot on a lap-28 restart and trailed Carpenter the final 23 laps, finishing 0.802 of a second back. ... Benji Hicks inherited the point after Burdette's lap-four spin and paced the field until he and Zack Dohm spun while battling for the lead on lap 19. Dohm appeared to enter turn three too hard, making contact with Hicks and causing them both to spin, bringing out the sixth caution. Dohm recovered to ninth, while Hicks finished 11th. ... Fourth-starting Henry Hornsby III led laps 19-22 before giving way to Carpenter and fading to fourth. ... The longest stoppage was a 10-minute red flag after Kennie Compton Jr. and William Rose tangled on a lap-eight restart attempt, sending Compton hard into the frontstretch wall. Compton got out and expressed his frustration by throwing his helmet and striking Rose's car as he drove by the scene. Both drivers were disqualified for the night. ... The race honored Eslie Bills, the late Beckley racer. It was slowed by seven cautions and lasted 35 minutes, with 11 competitors completing 50 laps and 14 running at the checkers.

On the move: Tyler Bare of Rockbridge Baths, Va., started 13th and finished third.
