Ryan Crane celebrates his first career major Late Model victory.
What won the race: Ryan Crane of Panama City, Fla., overcame contact with multiple lapped cars, including launching over Joe Denby's left rear on the 47th lap, for his first career Late Model victory in Saturday's 50-lap Bash at the Beach finale at Southern Raceway. Crane beat Dillon Tidmore to the line by 1.180 seconds for the $7,000 payday and his first career Southern All Star series triumph.
Quotable: “(It feels) pretty good, getting our first win here and being close to home. It takes a lot of people to put this deal together,” Crane said. “Shane (Clanton) and Wyatt (Eichelberger) prepared a real fast Capital hot rod, I was just fortunate enough to drive it ... this was my first weekend back since October of '23. Last night was my first night back in the car, so we're gonna get back after it."
Key notes: Crane captured his first major Late Model victory, but not without controversy. His lap-19 contact sent Bo Odom off the racing surface in turn three, drawing the night's second stoppage. Odom, making his first Late Model starts in more than 10 years, retired and was credited with 11th. ... Crane stretched his lead to more than 5.5 seconds ahead of Tidmore by lap 35 before seeing it dwindle to less than three seconds as he became mired behind Joe Denby; Denby slowed suddenly on the 47th lap, causing Crane to climb his left-rear tire and land on his driver's door, sending them both sliding to a stop in turn two. ... Controversy arose as series officials credited the lap-47 caution solely to Denby, who did not continue and placed eighth in the final rundown. ... Crane assumed the lead amidst multiple drivers racing ahead to voice their disagreement with the ruling. Fans were seen shouting and gesturing toward the scoring tower in disapproval. ... The race's opening caution came when Tidmore was called for jumping the initial start. Tidmore never challenged Crane after that. ... Billy Franklin finished third to go along with his two previous runner-up results thus far in SAS competition. ... Joseph Joiner, winner of Friday's $3,000 Bash at the Beach opener, improved two positions and finished fourth. ... Dillon Crim spun from seventh on a lap-19 restart attempt, drawing the fourth yellow flag before retiring. ... Steven Jernigan slowed for the first caution on lap seven and exited as the race's first retiree. ... Sixth-running Bo Slay and seventh-running David Breazeale had separate issues and both pulled off under the subsequent lap-seven yellow. ... The ninth annual Bash at the Beach was slowed by five incidents and lasted 31 minutes, with seven starters running at the checkers.
On the move: Michael Luna of Sparta, Tenn., started 16th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Crane’s Capital Race Car is sponsored by Panama City Cycles, SCCS Solutions and Twenty Five Designs.
