Ryan Gustin celebrates his second Outlaws victory of the season.
What won the race: Taking control from Drake Troutman on a lap-three restart, fourth-starting Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, led the remainder of Saturday's 50-lap Battle at the Crossroads finale at Swainsboro Raceway. Gustin beat Ashton Winger to the checkers by 2.933 seconds for the $15,000 top prize and his second World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory of the season.
Quotable: “Cody (Mallory) told me I could move a house with (the nose of the car) earlier, so I wasn’t too concerned about (the damage). He definitely beefed it up, I’m sure it bent out a little bit there, I got the yuke tire pretty good,” Gustin said. “I didn’t know what anyone else was on for tire (compound). I know what we was on, so I didn’t want to go out there and blister my stuff by any means, but I didn’t want to give up too much ground either, at the same time.”
Key notes: Gustin finished the race with left-front nose damage after clipping an infield tire. ... He captured his 12th career full-field feature victory and his first since Jan. 24's WoO season opener at Barberville, Fla.'s Volusia Speedway Park, worth $12,000. ... Ashton Winger regained runner-up honors from Drake Troutman on lap 32, but never seriously challenged Gustin in the closing laps. Winger was credited with leading the opening lap. ... Tenth-starting Bobby Pierce, winner of Friday's 35-lap Swainsboro opener, grabbed third from Troutman on lap 46. ... The pole-starting Troutman, of Hyndman, Pa., led lap two before sliding to fourth. ... Nick Hoffman slipped by Dennis Erb Jr. for fifth on lap 48. ... Michael Page started 22nd and finished 11th. ... Trey Mills rebounded to 14th after slowing to bring out the race's second caution on lap 19. ... Max Blair soldiered to an 18th-place result after utilizing a series provisional. ... Brian Shirley pitted from eighth with a flat left rear on lap 31; he could only recover to 20th. ... Cody Overton also pitted for a fresh right rear under the lap-31 yellow, but settled for 23rd, the final starter to complete 50 laps. ... Second-starting Garrett Smith slowed for the race's fourth and final stoppage on lap 45 before retiring. ... Austin Smith slowed on lap three to trigger the first slowdown. ... The main event lasted 29 minutes.
On the move: Dustin Sorensen of Rochester, Minn., started 24th and finished eighth.
