What won the race: Muscling his way by race-long pacesetter Luke Cooper, fifth-starting Ricky Weiss of Headingley, Manitoba, paced the final 11 circuits to win Friday's $10,000 rain-postponed Melvin Corum Memorial at Tazewell Speedway. Weiss secured his second Roger-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA victory of the season — April 20 at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, Tenn. — and increased his total race winnings to nearly $15,000.
Quotable: “I was sitting back there (behind Luke Cooper), all the restarts, I don’t think there was a single restart I got put on the outside (line) and I couldn’t take off with them,” Weiss said. “There’s one time I was able to time the start and kinda roll with them, but they pinch you down into turn one and we roughed up (Clyde Overholt) a bit, I apologize to him for that, (Jason) Welshan was there.”
Key notes: Cooper, of Woodruff, S.C., led the opening 39 laps from the pole before giving way to Weiss and settling for second, 2.387 seconds back at the line. ... Matt Henderson gained nine spots and placed sixth. ... Braden Mitchell advanced 13 positions to complete the top-10 finishers. ... Fourth-running Skylar Marlar slowed to draw the race's fourth caution on lap 25. He was credited with 15th. ... The event was rain postponed from June 1; only 25 cars returned for the rescheduled event, after the race originally drew 30 entries. ... The Melvin Corum Memorial was slowed by six separate incidents, the largest being a 15-minute red flag for cleanup when Ryan Smith and Matt Dooley were among several cars involved in a lap-three restart melee. ... The race lasted 50 minutes, with 10 drivers completing the distance. ... Richard Bailey scratched from the main event lineup.
On the move: Jimmy Thomas of Phenix City, Ala., started 24th and finished seventh.
