Dylan Thornton celebrates his second Malvern East victory of the season.
What won the race: Powering around the outside of race-long leader Dave Eckrich as the two came to take the white flag, third-starting Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., survived a one-lap restart to win Friday's $3,000 Malvern Bank East Series feature at Lafayette County Speedway. Thornton tallied his second victory of the season and the second of his brief Late Model career.
Quotable: “Oh it was badass man, you gotta keep digging. We took off there and (the car) didn’t feel that great, started moving around where they weren’t and kinda reeled (Dave Eckrich) in, then the lapped cars kinda burned my line away over there,” Thornton said. “I didn’t think I was gonna get by, then he got (held) up by one of them lapped cars there and we didn’t come here to run second .. I had to do what we had to do. Got into a lapped car here a little bit, hopefully (car owner) Brenda (Kay) isn’t too mad.”
Key notes: Eckrich, of Oxford, Iowa, led the opening 28 laps from the pole before Thornton made a bold move for the lead as he was slowed in lapped traffic. The two made contact on the perceived final lap before Chris Simpson spun from fourth to bring out the race's first caution. Eckrich took the checkers 0.721 of a second behind Thornton. ... Simpson was credited with 13th, the first car out of the race, in Jason Rauen's No. 98 entry. ... Justin Kay spun from eighth on the initial lap-29 restart attempt, drawing the race's second and final stoppage. He was credited with 14th. ... Fast qualifier Chad Holladay retired from 10th on lap 21. ... Friday's doubleheader finale lasted 18 minutes.
On the move: Luke Goedert of Guttenburg, Iowa, started 11th and finished seventh.
